BiographyMissy Graves Hornbeak began her life of dance at age 3 in Springhill, Louisiana at The Dance Factory. She studied tap, jazz, ballet, acrobatics, and twirling with her teacher and Godmother, Evelyn June McMullan Colvin. As a young girl, Missy was a member and drum major of The Southern Sweethearts twirling group and a member of The Star Line, a dance competition and performing group. During this time, she also received her modeling certificate from Mister Lynn's School of Modeling. Miss Graves was actively involved in dance and twirling competitions, pageants, modeling, and parades through the years and began teaching dance class at age 12. She was a professional model for Mister Lynn's, Joy Wise of Dallas, and interviewed with Ford Modeling Agency, later doing print work and local commercials. She was also a pageant coach and judge for several pageant systems. Upon graduation from Springhill High School, Missy moved to Shreveport, Louisiana and attended Centenary College, where she received her Bachelor of Arts in Dance. She studied tap, jazz, ballet, and modern dance and was one of the original members of Centenary's dance company, Escaped Images. Missy then studied under Ginger Folmer and Candace Earnest. She came full circle when in 1990 she began clogging and was taught by her very first teacher, Evelyn Colvin. In June 1984, while still in college, Missy married and opened up The Dance Shop in Shreveport, Louisiana. In 2002, Ms Hornbeak moved the studio to Bossier City and changed it's name to Danceworx. In 2005, Missy launched www.danceWorx.biz where students find their way to our studio to learn the grace and love of dance. Over the years, many of Missy's students have gone on to become dance instructors, choreographers, doctors, lawyers, and good parents. |
My MissionRarely in life does one achieve their true calling - the thing that makes them happy and gives them a sense of purpose. It is even more rare for one to find their true love. I feel truly blessed to have achieved both in one thing - dance.Even as a young girl I wanted to be a dance teacher. My love of dance is exceeded only by my love of children. As a dance instructor, I try to instill in my students the confidence and self esteem they will need to be happy and live a healthy life. The poise and grace learned as a child are lessons we carry throughout our lives. I try to share with students my love of dance and hope that the bonds we create will last forever. At the end of each day, it makes me feel good to know I might have made a difference in someone's life. |
